UK-France Travel: Eurostar Orders Double-Deck Trains
Eurostar has confirmed that it has placed an order for new, double-decker trains, although it's uncertain when or if they will be used on the London-Paris route.
The company announced that it has ordered 30 new trains from the French manufacturer Alstom, with an option for another 20.
- The Alstom Avelia Horizon trains are 200m long with two decks.
- Double-decker trains are common in France, but have never been used on UK railways, except for a brief experiment in 1949.
Eurostar's chief executive, Gwendoline Cazenave, said she was "particularly proud to bring double-decker trains to the UK for the very first time", adding they would bring "exceptional comfort".
Eurostar carried 19.5 million passengers last year.
